Mission

I will go Lord if you need me ... I will hold your people in my heart

I will go Lord

This morning after Mass on this Anzac Day, Sister Maureen Andrews received a special blessing before being sent out on mission to Cunnamulla in the western part of the Toowoomba Diocese. It seemed fitting that the hymn chosen after Communion emphasised the words chosen for this article. When Maureen had asked Bishop William Morris of Toowoomba if he had a place that he would like her to work in, his response was that the greatest need was for a Pastoral Leader in Cunnamulla and he asked her if she would go there. Being as Maureen terms herself ‘a country girl from way back’ she immediately responded positively to his request.

And it is indeed a challenge – a remote town, far removed from any of the other sisters of our Institute and a parish where the priest will visit monthly at most. However, as Sister Pauline Robinson said in explaining Maureen’s mission to the congregation this morning: ‘That’s what missionaries do’. Maureen herself is looking forward to the opportunity to serve the people of God in this remote area of Cunnamulla and its surrounding area. She has been sent to Baptize, to conduct funerals and to provide communion services when the priest is not available to say Mass. She will provide spiritual leadership and support and her many personal gifts as well as her long experience as a Social Worker in remote places will undoubtedly provide a background of understanding.
