The Missionary Franciscan Sisters express their deep sadness today following the news of the death of Sr Michael Somare who brought the young nation of Papua New Guinea through a period of self determination to Independence in 1975 before leading the nation as Prime Minister for many years.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of  Sir Michael, to our MFS Sisters in Papua New Guinea, and more generally, to the people of our neighbouring country.

Many Sisters served as missionaries in Papua New Guinea over many decades and so forged deep bonds with the people of  among they lived and worked. We share your sense of sadness and loss.

Sir Michael leaves a great legacy withn the nation he guided to Independence and has reserved a placed in the history of Papua New Guinea.
